CABARET VOLTAIRE - THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF SHEFFIELD
Electronic music has come a long way since Cabaret Voltaire began mixing it up with machines in order to evade boredom. As primitive as Watson, Kirk, and Mallinder's early material sounds decades after conception, in the wake of countless movements within the form, nothing can take away from the fact that no one will ever approach the spectral wonder inherent in the group's early work. Just over a third of "The Original Sound of Sheffield: '78/'82" — the sister release to 2001's similarly titled anthology that covers 1983-1987 — overlaps with "The Living Legends" compilation, but this disc now acts as the first place to go for early Cabaret Voltaire. "The Living Legends" covered roughly the same period, collecting tracks from singles, EPs, and compilations. This one opens up the scope to consider the landmark (and vastly different) post-punk LPs "Red Mecca" and "2 X 45", and thankfully resists the unavoidable temptation of including large chunks from both. This compilation and the one that covers the era that followed form an excellent overview of the Sheffield group. Despite the fact that longtime fans might balk at the exclusion of equally immense moments like "2 X 45"'s "Breathe Deep," "8 Crepuscule Tracks"' "Sluggin' fer Jesus," and "Red Mecca"'s "Sly Doubt," there's simply too much prime material from this phase to cram onto one disc. For the unfamiliar who have grown tired of hearing about the group's influence upon a wide swath of electronic producers and groups, two discs that neatly summarize their startling greatness are now at the ready.

ANNE CLARKE - THE BEST OF
Songwriter and pianist Anne Clark has been a cult figure since the early '80s and has amassed a rather sizable catalog despite her small but rabid following. She writes nearly-Gothic love songs full of obsession and pathos, and pretty orchestral settings with clever instrumental figures and stinging piano runs and minor-key epiphanies. She's a consummate artist, playing to her strengths while trying to subtly, but surely, extend her reach, and always following her own muse, even when it takes her into dissonant territory. Most of her albums are out of print even on CD, and sell for collector's prices when they can be found. This is too bad, because Clark has assembled a solid, if quirky, and passionately honest body of work. This best-of issued by Beehive is truly that. It features 24 tracks and clocks in at over 75 minutes. Many of these are Clark's most lovely songs, such as "The Sitting Room," "All Night Party" (with Vini Reilly of Durutti Column), the "12" remix" of "Our Darkness," and "The Last Emotion," as well as instrumental themes such as "Swimming" and "An Ordinary Life." Simply put, without being able to collect her singles or albums, this is as good as you can do without getting ripped off in the bargain. Anne Clark's best-of presents a wonderfully deep portrait of a complex and misunderstood artist who deserves far more in terms of the recognition she has thus far received. This is truly a beautiful collection by a great poet and composer.

THE HUMAN LEAGUE - REPRODUCTION
Well, what can we say ? This is it! This is the beginning of the modern Synthpop. When this album came out in 1979 it was a real shock for the audience. Huma League were the first to introduce a perfect mixture between col electronic and pop, as Kraftwerk did a couple of years before.
Human League were the pioneers of the new romantic british movement and this album is a sort of manifesto of the possibilities of synthetizzers. By this album several band believed that electronic music could be an accessible kind of music for the people. It was not a war on guitars but moreover, it was the man controlling the machine.
